Sravasti

Introduction
SravastiSravasti is included among the most important eight Buddhist pilgrimages in the world. Known as Savatthi in the past, the capital city of ancient kingdom ‘Kosala’ was the place where Lord Buddha spent his 24 Vassavasa(rain retreat).

Buddha used to stay at a garden, named Jetwan Vihar, constructed by one of his disciples, Sudatta-a rich businessman. He also is said to have shown his million-fold manifestation here. He started his missionary work throughout the life from here only.

Lord Mahavira, the most popular leader of Jainism, also visited the town many of the times. This place is also mentioned in the two great epics of Hindus-Ramayana and Mahabharata.


Location & Climate
Sravasti, a small town in district Gonda, near Gorakhpur, is 134 kms from Lucknow and 29 kms from Balrampur. This place also experiences tropical climate. So, winters are pleasant and October to February are the most soothing.


Sightseeing
Sravasti» Remains of Sahet and Mehet Villages : Sravasti has been identified with the remains of two villages, Sahet & Mehet. Remnants of Jetavana and original Mahabodhi Tree, under which Buddha attained enlightenment, still exist here.

» Jetavana : Jetavana has 2 monasteries, 6 temples and 5 stupas. Lord Buddha is said to have lived in one of these temples which was built by monk Anathpindak.

» Buddhist Monasteries : Sri Lanka, Chinese, Myanmarese and Thai monasties are close to Jetavana Vihar.

» Shwetambara Temple : A Shwetambara temple is also here which is very famous among Jains. Another temple is believed to be the birthplace of Jain Tirthankar Swayambu Nath.
