The tiny hamlet of Shirdi is located in the state of Maharashtra.
Sai Baba, one of the most influential saints of modern India resided in the
village of Shirdi for sixty long years. The Shirdi Temple at Shirdi houses
the samadhi of Shri Sai Baba. Today, the village has turned into an
important centre of pilgrimage for people of all religions. Sai Baba never
tried to publicize himself or be in the forefront. Yet, tourists and
devotees from all over India as well as the world visit Shirdi to pay
tribute to the noble saint and seek his blessings.
Shri Sai Baba was a personage of distinctive characteristics and affecting
thoughts. Distressed by the communal disharmony he decided never to disclose
his real name, the name of his parents and the religion and caste he
belonged to. He could be frequently heard uttering 'Allah'. He preached
equality and said that God is Almighty and he has given equal right to each
and every one on the earth.
The Shirdi Temple or the Samadhi of Shri Sai Baba was actually in the
possession of a millionaire from Nagpur, Shreemant Gopalrao. The merchant
was a devotees of Sai Baba. The temple is built in stones and the samadhi is
constructed with white marble. The Samadhi is replete with embellishments
and is surrounded with a marble railing. Two ornate silver pillars stand in
front of the Samadhi. An Italian marble statue is placed behind the Samadhi.

Other Attractions
The village of Shirdi has a number sacred sites related to Sai Baba's life.
Besides the Shirdi Temple, there are a few other famous sites that devotees
and tourists never fail to visit. To have an insightful experience, one must
visit these sites as well.
» Gurusthan : Sai Baba arrived at Shirdi when he was
a Bal Yogi (child ascetic). It is the spot where Shri Sai Baba was spotted
sitting under a neem tree. Later, the place became popular as the Gurusthan.
Renovation work was done here in the year 1941. The shrine has a huge
portrait of Sai Baba and also houses a statue of the revered saint.
» Chavadi : The sacred spot of Chavadi lies at a
short distance from Gurusthan. It is the place where saint Sai Baba used to
sleep. The Chavadi has been segregated into two parts. One of the parts has
a huge portrait of Baba along with a wooden bed and chair that Sai Baba used
during his stay.
» Lendi Baug : Lendi Baug is the another spot that
reminds one of the noble saint Sai Baba. The garden was created by Baba
himself. He used to come here everyday to water the plants and take rest
under a neem tree.
» Khandoba Mandir : Yet another attraction at Shirdi
is the Khandoba Mnadir. The temple stands on the main road. It is the temple
where Sai Baba was first greeted by priest Mhalsapati when he entered the
village of Shirdi. The temple also has images of Khandoba, Banai and
Mhalsai.

Airports
lying close by include Mumbai (260 km), Pune (185 km) and Aurangabad (125
km). Mumbai has both domestic and international airports. There are regular
flights from here to all over India and the world. Manmad, at a distance of
60 km, is the closest railhead. It lies on the Central Railway and thus has
express trains from the key destinations of the country. From the Manmad
Railway Station, one can take buses and taxis to get to Shirdi. The state
transport corporation buses also ply between Mumbai and Shirdi.
