Introduction

This
temporary shelter of His Holiness Dalai Lama attracts the ceaseless stream
of Tibetan refugees and tourists from all over the world. They gather here
to receive his blessings & teachings.This town was established as a
British garrison initially. Mc Leod Ganj also has been a home of nomadic
Gaddi tribe. Even now, a lot of Gaddi families live in the villages around
the town. Western & Indian tourists & scholars come to see the
rebirth of an ancient & fascinating civilization. Dharmashala keeps
rocking with the sights & sounds of old Tibet while maintaining the
rapport with the modernity.
Location & Climate
The town is situated in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It
lies on the spur of Dhauladhar(white ridge) snow capped range and rises out
of Kangra Vally below. A British official made a comment on the town "No
scenery , in my opinion , presents such a sublime & delightful contrasts".
High altitude & cool weather actally cause deja vu among Tibetans by
reviving the memories of Tibet.
Sightseeing
'Mc Leod Ganj has the character of its own', according to a tourist who has
extensively travelled in the hills. This town has a rare collection of
surprises for you. These include the following.

Residence of Dalai Lama : This is on the south edge of the town. It has
been his residence since he came here from Tibet in 1960. Most of the house
has been acquired by the government offices leaving a small portion for his
residence.
» Tsuglagkhang : Main Buddhist temple of Dharmshala
is situated just opposite the residence of Dalai Lama. It houses the images
of Shakyamuni, Padmsambhava, Avlokiteshvara in meditation posture.
» Gompa Dip Tse-Chok Ling : Main prayer hall of this
small monastry has a image of Shakyamuni and excusite mandaps.
» Library of Tibetan Works & Archives : The
library rightfully boasts to have the rich collection of almost 40% of
original Tibetan manuscripts.
You will find umpteen number of shops in the narrow streets of the town.
Traditional Tibetan arts & handicrafts can be bought from these shops.
Paragliding in Kangra Vally and trekiing in Dhauladhar may also be tried.
Kangra district is also believed to have more than 555 species of birds
according to a study by J W den Besten. The tourists may also find a small
town in Kangra, 3 kms east to Dhameta, a cluster of antiques of unique tall
temples which remains dipped in the water for 8 months but stands exposed to
the human eye only during March to June.

Its nearest airport Gaggla is 13 kms and the nearest railway station
Pathankot is 85 kms away. Regular Bus Service from Manali and Delhi is also
