Introduction

This
birth place of Lord Buddha and one of the four most important Buddhist
pilgrimages is also a world heritage site. Lumbini has a rare reservoir of
spiritual, archeological and natural wealth at one place. Besides situated
in the lap of mother nature, this place can boast to house a priceless
collection of numerous monuments as The Sacred Garden, Ashokan Pillar,

Location & Climate
Lumbini is situated in Rupendehi District in the south-western Tarai of
Nepal. This has the abundance of greenary and wild life. The temperature
here varies from 44 degrees C in the summer to and 7 degrees C in winter.
June to September is rainy season at Lumbini. So, best time for your visit
is between September last to mid-March.

The Sacred Garden : The legendary Sacred Garden, where mother of Lord
Buddha gave him birth, is listed as world heritage site by UNESCO. It is
spread over an area of 8 square kms. The garden is surrounded by umpteen
numbers of temples, monasteries and Stupas.
» The Ashokan Pillar : This is the first
epigraphical evidence regarding Buddha. After the three hundred years of
Buddha's demise, Great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka visited the place and got this
pillar erected. The pillar, with inscriptions in Brahmi script, is known as
Rummendei Pillar after the earlier name of the place.
» Mayadevi Temple : This brick temple houses a
sandstone sculpture depicting the scenes of Lord Buddha's birth by his
mother Queen Mayadevi. Historians believe that the temple was built on an
Ashokan Stupa.
» The Pushkarni Pool : After taking a holy bath in
this pool, mother of Buddha gave him birth. This is just outside the
Mayadevi temple and south to the Ashokan pillar.
» Kushinagar : At a village named Kasia, Lord Buddha
left this world due to dysentery. The same place is known as Kushinagar now
and many monuments have been made at this historical place.
» Kapilavastu : This historic town is believed to be
the capital of Shakya Republic. He was the prince of the same republic. Many
historical remains still exist here.

Accessibility
You can reach Kathmandu by air and take another internal flight to
Bhairahawa, an all-season airport. Lumbini Buddha Garden is just 15-minutes
away from here by car. There are regular bus services to Lumbini and
Taulihawa, 20 kms away from Lumbini. You can also enjoy a pleasant 7 hours
drive from Kathmandu on a tarmac road. Rickshaws, taxis and buses can be
availed for local transport.
