Hemis Festival

The Background
Hemis Festival - ladakhOne of the most famous festivals in June to celebrate the birth of guru Padmsambhava.(Gur Rimpoche), the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet and venerated as the representative reincarnate of Buddha. The sacred dance drama of the life and mission is performed at Hemis Gompa located at a distance of 45 kms from Leh, the capital of Ladakh wearing facial masks and colourful brocades robes.

Hemis Gompa is known as the Chang-Chub-sam-Ling, the solitary place of the Compassionate One. This dance drama depicts the destroying the evil forces and the celebration of good over evil. However, there is a difference of opinion among lamas about this interpretation.

This 200 years old tradition was introduced by a member of Ladakh's ruling family who was reincarnated in the 18th century as the monastry's Head Lama, Sras Rimpoche.

This was built in 1630 during the reign of Sengge Namgyal, an illustrious rular of Ladakh. It florished under the Namgyal dynesty for the royalty favoured the Drugpa sect, which managed the monestry. The temple is known as Tshogkhang.
